What to expect at your first appointment

Whether you are new to osteopathy or have had treatment before, we want you to feel comfortable, informed and involved in your care. Your first appointment costs £84.

Understanding your symptoms

Your osteopath will begin by listening to the reason for your visit. They will ask about your symptoms, how they affect your day-to-day life and what you hope to achieve from treatment. They will also take a general medical history to help guide your assessment and care.

Your examination

Your osteopath will assess your movement, joints and muscles, and carry out nerve and orthopaedic tests where appropriate.

You may be asked to remove some clothing so the area can be examined. Please feel welcome to bring shorts or wear loose, comfortable clothing. A gown is available if you would prefer. Let your osteopath know if you have any concerns or preferences.

After the examination, your osteopath will explain their findings and discuss a proposed treatment plan, including suitable hands-on techniques, what to expect from recovery and advice on activity and exercise. You are welcome to ask questions at any stage.

Your treatment

Treatment is tailored to your needs and may include hands-on techniques such as soft-tissue massage, joint articulation and mobilisation. Your osteopath will discuss treatment with you before proceeding.

Your comfort matters throughout. Please tell your osteopath if anything feels uncomfortable so they can adjust the approach.

After your appointment

You may be given an individual home exercise plan and practical advice to support you between appointments. Some people experience mild, temporary soreness after treatment, similar to how muscles can feel after exercise. If you have any concerns about how you feel afterwards, please contact the practice for advice.
