Knee pain: support for stairs, walking and staying active

When your knee hurts on the stairs or starts aching halfway through a walk, even a simple outing can need planning. You may be wondering whether to keep exercising or avoid putting weight through it.

We will ask what has become difficult and what you would like to get back to. That might be walking the dog, kneeling in the garden or feeling more confident at the gym.

What is your knee making harder?

  • Going up or down stairs
  • Getting up from a chair
  • Walking further or over uneven ground
  • Kneeling, squatting or gardening
  • Running or taking part in sport

What your visit involves

Your osteopath will discuss how your symptoms began and examine your knee, with relevant movement and strength checks. We will explain what we find and whether further medical assessment is needed.

A practical plan for your knee

If osteopathic care is suitable, we will agree a plan that may include exercise, activity advice and hands-on treatment. You will have a chance to ask questions before deciding how to proceed.

We will help you find a manageable level of activity and review how your knee responds. Progress is about useful changes in your day, not simply completing a set of exercises.

Care you feel comfortable with
Hands-on options, if appropriate, are explained and agreed with you before treatment.
Strength for everyday tasks
Your exercises can work towards movements such as getting out of a chair or using stairs.
Building activity gradually
We can discuss pacing walks and exercise, then increasing the demands as your knee allows.
