Shoulder pain: help with reaching, dressing and sleeping

Putting on a coat, reaching into a cupboard or rolling onto your side at night can become frustrating when your shoulder hurts. You may have started avoiding movements without knowing whether that is helping.

We want to understand the movements you miss, not just the painful spot. Tell us whether your priority is sleeping more comfortably, getting through work or returning to swimming, the gym or another activity.

Everyday difficulties you may recognise

  • Reaching overhead or behind your back
  • Putting on a coat or fastening clothing
  • Lifting shopping or carrying a bag
  • Sleeping on the affected side
  • Returning to sport or exercise

What your visit involves

We will ask how the problem began and assess your shoulder movement and strength, with other checks where relevant. This helps us explain possible reasons for the pain and whether treatment here is appropriate.

Building confidence in your shoulder

Your plan may include exercises, advice on adjusting activity and hands-on care where suitable. We will choose a starting point that reflects your current movement and comfort.

Shoulder problems can take time to change. We will review practical signs of progress, such as reaching a little further or managing a daily task more easily, and discuss further assessment if needed.

Hands-on options
Where appropriate, treatment may help you explore more comfortable movement alongside your exercise plan.
Working with your current movement
We adapt the starting point to what you can manage rather than forcing a painful range.
Strength for your goals
Exercises can progress towards the demands of your work, home life or sport.
